From Madeira's capital Funchal drive road VR1 east to junction 26. Follow signs for Santana. Drive 10.4 km and turn right towards Penha de Agua, just before a bridge. Drive another 1.1 km, to where the restaurant Galé is located on the left hand side of the road, in a right curve. Find parking along the road.
Start hiking by heading up the concrete steps on the right hand side of the restaurant. Follow this path up to where it crosses a road, and then continue uphill on the concrete path. The path soon turns into a forest path, and at approximately 240m, after 400 metres, make sure you fork left in the slightly vague path junction. From here continue on a well defined path all the way up to the concrete summit cairn.
Descend by reversing your ascent route.

Elisabeth and I weren't keen on mist and rain this Thursday so decided to take on Aguia, a relatively short hike to a low mountain. It was a fine walk, with some nice views towards Arieiro amongst the trees, but unfortunately it started to rain when we started our descent.
