Sommet du Teillon trail head in La Garde.
For Sommet du Teillon fork right 1.5km from trail head.
For Sommet du Teillon fork left after having crossed the valley.
Ascending the west slopes of Sommet du Teillon.

From the round about by the market square in the town Castellane, approximately 65 km west/north-west of Nice as the crow flies, drive road D4085 5.4 km in the direction of Grasse, to the village La Garde. Locate a car park on the left hand side of the road and park there.

Start your walk by continuing 40 metres down the road and then locate the start of path GR-4 on the left hand side of the road. Follow this path, marked by yellow paint, 1.4 km to a path junction inside the forest. Fork right here, following signs for "Sommet du Teillon". The path continues east and runs up in the left hand side of the gully Ravin Des Gravieres. At around 1320 metres the path crosses the gully and you get to another path junction. Turn left here, still following signs for Teillon. When you get out of the forest the path gets less obvious, but there are a number of small cairns and some yellow paint, which can be followed all the way up to the saddle at 1735 metres. From here turn left (north-east) and find your best route to the summit, which is marked by a cairn and a sign.

Descend by reversing your ascent route.

11. October 2011

This Tuesday was our last full day of autumn holiday, and we decided to spend the last night in the same Castellane hotel as we had spent the first night. We didn't have any specific hiking plans, except that we would definitely be hiking on this very fine day. While I was driving Elisabeth was looking at the map of the area and we concluded that Sommet du Teillon seemed to offer a nice hike to a fine view point.

We found the trail head in La Garde after having first driven past it, and set out a little after 10:30. Finding the correct route proved to be straight forward as there were a number of signs towards "Sommet du Teillon" along the path. And after a bit more than 1 hours we reached the summit, having passed two other hikers in the steep slopes below the saddle south of the summit. To our delight we found that there was hardly any wind today so we decided to spend some time at the summit and enjoy the views, out lunch, and the bright sun.

As I started to take photos of the surrounding mountains I noticed something of interest; there seemed to be an easy route to Sommet de la Bernarde, the prominent mountain I had intended to visit on our first day in Castellane. After a closer look at the map I concluded that this would definitely be a possible afternoon hike.

The hike back down to La Garde was an easy stroll, and I made sure to drink as much as possible in order to be prepared for the hike to follow. Back at the car we decided to skip lunch an instead stop at a shop and grab a sandwich or two before driving up to Bernarde trail head.
