Start measuring from the 3-way junction on road 60 above (west of) Stranda centre, where road 60 goes towards Sykkylven, Stranda centre and Hellesylt. Drive towards Hellesylt and Stryn.
- At 27.0 km turn left towards Hellesylt.
- At 27.9 km turn right towards Vollset.
- At 34.9 km turn right towards Frøysa.
- At 38.8 km fork left.
- At 38.9 km find parking around the road fork, e.g. on the right hand side of the road forking right.
Start your hike by following the road forking right, across the bridge. Fork right in the road junction after 350 metres, and continue another 350 metres along the right hand side of a field. Walk through the gate and then onto a path a little before a small wooden bridge. Follow this path, which is marked by red paint, 1.5 km up to the pass. You will find a post box with a registration book a few metres further ahead, on the north side of a large boulder.
From the registration point leave the path and head left (south) up towards Bustegane. There's no path here, and the terrain is partly strenuous with heather, moss and grass. Find your best route uphill, and across to the unmarked summit somewhere on the summit plateau. A small area with three boulders seems to be the highest point.
Descend by reversing your ascent route.
We were spending Ascension Day at Fjellsetra, and after having "launched" our boat for the season and some other cabin work, I set off towards Hellesylt to hike Bustegane. I had no knowledge about the route to Bustegane other than what I could read from the map, and I was very uncertain about the amount of snow. As I approached Frøysadalen I considered driving back to Fjellsetra based on the amount of snow I could see. But I decided to continue and worst case turn around by Vatnedalsvatnet.
I had to park a little lower than planned because of road repair work after a stream had washed away parts of the road, but I'm not sure one is supposed to drive up that part of the road anyway. After a nice walk along the path through the forest I hit snow a little before the pass at 800m, and I was getting very sceptical to how doable this hike would be. But from the pass I saw that the steeper part of Bustegane could be climbed with only one short section of steep snow. So after having crossed the flatter snow fields in the lower part of my route it was fairly easy going all the way up to the summit.
At the summit I had very nice views to the higher neighbours around Bustegane and took my time to take photos and eat my sandwich. Then back to the car in still nice conditions.
