NOTE: This is probably neither the easiest nor the best route to Craigendarroch, and you're likely to find a better route from somewhere closer to Ballater centre than Craigendarroch Hotel.
From the centre of the village Ballater on road A93 drive approximately 1.6 km north-west, in the direction of Braemar. Turn right where signed for Craigendarroch Hotel and find parking just inside the gate.
Start you hike by following the road running south-west, almost parallel to A9 going back towards Ballater. When the road ends locate a path heading uphill into the forest, and follow this path to where it meets the Craigendarroch circular path. Turn right and follow the circular path until you get to a path heading left (uphill). Follow this path to the large cairn a few tens of metres south of the summit and then continue to the summit, which is marked by a nice cairn with a direction dial at the top.
Descend by reversing your ascent route.
01. October 2012
Elisabeth and me had been in Scotland since Thursday and were due to fly home from Aberdeen this sunny Monday. After a night at the nice hotel Deeside, in Ballater, I decided to go for a short morning hike before breakfast, and Craigendarroch seemed like an obvious candidate.
I parked at the Craigendarroch Hotel, but later found out I probably should have parked a few hundred metres closer to Ballater centre in order to find the best route to the summit. But hiking from this hotel proved OK, and my route took me to the surprisingly large cairn by the south viewpoint. From here I had a nice view to yesterday's mountain, Lochnagar, as well as some other nice tops.
After enjoying the views and taking some photos I walked back down to my car, and then off to the hotel for a shower and a nice breakfast.
