Drive road E39 north from Bergen, to the round-about where roads E39 and E16 meet, approximately 14.0 km north from Danmarksplass (the big junction where roads E39 and 540 meet, south of Bergen). At the round-about turn left, continuing on road E39 for 3.2 km. Turn right here, where signed for "Breistein", approximately 200 metres after a Shell petrol station (per May 2010). Drive 350 metres and turn right, signed for "Haukås skole". Drive 200 metres and park on the car park just after the school.
Start walking by heading up amongst some small wooden buildings belonging to Leikvang sports stadium and you will see a good path leading into the forest. Follow this path south-east. When you hit a forest road cross this road and proceed on the path on the other side of the road. Follow this well defined path along the north ridge of Hetlebakksåta. You will descend a few metres on a few occasions, and when you get to a small lake pass this on its right hand side. The path will take you all the way to the summit, which is just above the forest.
Descend by reversing your ascent route.
I had travelled from Brattvåg to Bergen on the early flight from Vigra this Tuesday morning. The 45 minutes drive to Vigra was done mostly on snow, but by 06:00 the weather was starting to improve, in particular towards south, so I had hopes that I would be able to do an evening hike in fine conditions. By the time I arrived Bergen the sky was clear and there were promises of a very nice day.
We left the offices at our factory at Hordvikneset at 17:15 and I had decided to
make a stop at Leikvang on my way to the hotel at Kokstad. Navigating to
Leikvang was not a problem since I had been here on a few occasions competing in
athletics back in the early 1990s (I think maybe my track record still stands),
and after a quick change into hiking gear I was on my way at 18:35. Navigating
along the ridge, through the forest, was dead easy, and after a brisk walk I
found myself at the summit, happy to find that the summit had nice views in most
directions. After taking photos and enjoying the sun I headed back down, this
time running leisurely all the way back to the car.
