Take the ferry from Sulesund to Hareid. From the round-about just off the ferry at Hareid drive 10.6 km on road 61 to the round-about just outside Ulsteinvik. Take the second exit out of the round-about and stay on road 61. 1.4 km after the round-about turn right where it is signed for "Dimna" and "Kleven verft" (Kleven ship yard). Drive 1.3 km until you have a "Spar" shopping centre on your right. Find parking here.

Start walking by continuing for another 100+ metres in the same direction as driving, until you get to a T-junction. Turn right towards "Ytre Dimna" and continue along the road for 600 metres until it is signed "Kleven verft" to the right and a path forks off to the left signed for "Høgåsen". Follow this clearly visible path all the way up to the summit, turning right where another path is coming in from your left 300 metres west of the summit.

In order to have a different descent route than the ascent head back down the ascent route to the path-junction 300 metres west of the summit. In stead of taking left onto the ascent route continue straight ahead. This path is passing some wet areas, but by doing some jumping and watching the steps it is possible to stay dry. This path is soon turning south, and then south-east. There are a couple of paths going south-west, back down towards trail head, and it doesn't really matter which one you choose; they will both take you down to the areas of houses west/south-west of trail head, from where you can follow the road back to the car.

18. April 2008

For the second week running I was spending a work-day in Ulsteinvik, and obviously I had to grab the opportunity to visit another mountain at the Hareidlandet island. I had called Ansgar the day before and asked if he was keen on a hike. He suggested Høgåsen, which was fine by me since we then wouldn't have to cross any snow.

I made final arrangements with Ansgar during work this Friday, and we finally agreed to meet at the Spar shop at Dimna. From there we drove back to his house and parked the cars. Ansgar decided to bring his youngest daughter, Joletta at 2½, and we set out at 15:55.

This was another fine spring day, with a decent temperature of 9°C, but a slightly chilling wind. We walked along the road before hitting the nice and dry path up through the forest, and made it to the summit in just over 30 minutes (the pace not being terribly impressive since Ansgar was carrying Joletta in a child carrier on his back). After some sessions with the camera and Ansgar making a works call (!) we headed back down. At this stage Joletta wasn't interested in the child carrier so a couple of minutes of a small child's stubbornness was displayed, but she soon settled in the child carrier and seemed to enjoy the bouncy ride.

Down the final hill at Gjerdsbakkane we saw both sheep and llamas, grassing side by side, and also some goats that were enjoying the fine spring weather.

Back at Ansgar's house we had a small chat before I got in the car and headed back to the ferry and northern Sunnmøre territory.
