NOTE, 12.05.2014: The small car park mentioned here was turned into private parking late 2013, and cannot any longer be used. The best parking is probably down by the school / football park closer to road 60.

From Ålesund drive road E39 in the direction of Bergen/Sulesund. Exit onto road 60 by Blindheim, cross under road E39 and continue to the round-about. From the round-about drive 4.4 km and turn left onto a small road (no signs). Drive a little over 500 metres along this road to a small farm on your right hand side. You will see a small car park between the house and the barn. Park here.

Walk another 90 metres along the road and then turn left up a gravel road towards a garage. When you get to the garage turn left and cross an old fence and then a small stream. Then turn right and walk uphill across the fields. After approximately 150 metres you will meet a path, which you follow uphill in a north/north-east direction. This path soon crosses the stream and you stay on this path all the way to Emblemsætra, where there are a couple of cabins.

From Emblemsætra you can see the ridge that leads to Høgekubben. Find your best route directly up to the ridge (there is no path, but if you turn left by the cabins and head west you will meet the path that runs along the ridge), and then proceed north-east (right) on the path that runs up to the summit. The summit is marked by a trigonometric point and a cairn.

The descent is easiest done via the ascent route.

26. April 2009

I was spending most of this Sunday in Blindheim (just outside Ålesund) with Njål, who was playing in a boys-10 football tournament. As there was a 1½ hour slot between the first and second matches so I had made sure I had brought hiking gear. The plan was to do Høgekubben, which I assumed I could do in less than 1½ hours, including the driving.

After Njål's first match I drove to Emblem, changed clothes inside the car, and headed up through the forest. Around half-way towards Emblemsætra I suddenly had an adder one metre ahead of me on the path. I rushed to get the camera out, and managed to take a number of photos before the adder disappeared into the bush. It was many years since I last saw an adder while out hiking.

At Emblemsætra I talked briefly with a family who clearly owned one of the buildings there, and based on advice for shortest route to Høgekubben I headed directly up to the ridge. Almost at the top of the hill before the ridge there was another adder! I pulled out the camera and took some more adder-photos before proceeding to the windy summit.

During my descent I stumbled across the second adder again, but this time I didn't ask it to pose for the photographer. Running all the way back down to the car allowed me to change clothes and by a Coke and a chocolate before Njål's second game of the day.
