Assume your starting point is the Ålesund area. Drive road 61 to Sulesund and take the ferry across to Hareid. From the ferry port at Hareid start measuring. Drive 6.7 km on road 61, towards Ulsteinvik. Turn left onto a gravel road and turn left at 7.2 km. This road will take you up to the north-east end of Ringstaddalen valley. Trail head is at 13.1 km, on the left hand side of the road, and you will see a barrier across the forest road a few metres from the gravel road. Find parking along the road around trail head.
Start your walk by following the forest road past the barrier, and then past a couple of cabins. Fork left after the cabins and follow the obvious path. You can stay on this path all the way to the summit, but be aware of a couple of path forks down in the forest; the path you should follow is marked by yellow and orange ribbons. The path runs north-east and then north, before doing a switch-back towards west, before heading north-west to the summit. The summit is marked by a proper cairn.
Return by reversing your ascent route.
This was the last of my bi-weekly Wednesday training courses in Ulsteinvik, and I had as usual packed some hiking gear. But when I left home at 7am I wasn't terribly optimistic since there was thick fog all over Sunnmøre. However, the weather improved considerably during the day, so when I met Arnt at trail head the conditions were quite fine.
We did good pace up the hill, including some stretches of easy running, and
could enjoy a fairly mild and wind-free afternoon. At the summit we did a bit of
"name that mountain", before running back down to the cars. All in all a fine
afternoon to a fine little top.
