Take the ferry from Sulesund to Hareid. From the round-about just after having got off the ferry at Hareid, drive 3.1 km towards Ulsteinvik on road 61. Turn left where it is signed for "Røyset". Continue along this road for 4.9 km, and then turn left. Drive 700 metres to the top of the hill, finding parking just after the cattle-grid.

Locate the forest road on the left hand side of the road and follow this road, first north and then gradually more west. After just over 300 meters you turn left onto another forest road, and follow this forest road for 600 metres up to 240 metres. Here the forest road turns into a path. Follow this path all the way to the summit, which is marked by a big cairn.

The descent is done by following the ascent route.

14. May 2008

I was working in Ulsteinvik this Wednesday, and since I was going to work there also the following day, with an early start, I had decided to stay overnight at the hotel in Ulsteinvik. Melshornet therefore seemed like a good candidate for a hike. Because of the weather, with very poor visibility above 400 metres, I was depending on finding a hike that had a clearly visible path all the way to the summit; Melshornet seemed to fit into this category.

I set off from Ulset at 18:35 and walked briskly all the way to the summit, stopping once for some photos before I got into the thick fog. At the summit the visibility was down to tens of metres, so the summit stop was very short, before running all the way back down to the car.
