Mont Ventoux is located approximately 50 km north-east of Avignon, and is reached via road D974, which runs almost to the summit. From the summit car park you walk around the large summit building on the east side, and then head up some concrete steps to a concrete summit plateau. The whole walk is done in not more than one minute.
I had hiked Blayeul Sommet earlier this Monday, and Elisabeth and I decided to pay Mont Ventoux an afternoon visit. The drive from our base at Sisteron was longish, on narrow roads, but gave us the benefit of seeing more of the nice Provence landscape. Our intention was to park somewhere below the summit and then hike, but we never found a suitable place to start a hike so ended up driving all the way up to the car park a few metres below the summit.
The summit area was extremely windy, and while we were at Mont Ventoux I was the
only one who walked up the the very summit. The views from the summit were quite
nice, but it was a hazy day so the views were not as nice as they would have
been on a clear day. Hence we were back in the cars after a few minutes, and
drove back to Sisteron for a well deserved dinner.
