Assuming you arrive Steinkjer from south on road E6 start measuring when you exit the small tunnel "Måsørtunnelen" in Steinkjer:
- At 2.6 km you exit the tunnel "Eggetunnelen".
- At 8.1 km turn left onto road 17, signed for "Namsos".
- At 42.2 km turn left onto road 715, signed for "Osen".
- At 47.4 km turn right onto a car park.
Start your hike by following the gravel service road towards north. This road can be followed all the way up to the telecomm mast, in total 5.6 km. When the service road ends continue south-west, on a partly vague path, to Øyensskavlen's summit, which is marked by a large cairn.
Descend by reversing the ascent route.
Njål and me had arrived Steinkjer the previous afternoon and I decided to go for a hike this Friday morning while Einar and Torill were at work and the boys would play in the garden.
Thanks to Petter Bjørstad's informative pages I found a good route description to this prominent top, and had an easy walk all the way to the summit on a nice and sunny day. And it wasn't only me enjoying the warm weather, a small adder was sun bathing in the middle of the service road at approximately 400 metres.
After my summit stop, where I enjoyed a chocolate and some water, in addition to the fine views, I did a fair bit of easy jogging back down to the car park. During the descent I met in total five other hikers.
