From Lucca drive north-east towards Matraia. From the traffic lights in Matraia continue uphill in a north-eastern direction for 4.5 km, and find parking on the left hand side of the road. Start walking by walking west (left), and follow the marked mountain road clockwise around the big telecom tower. When you get to the gate of the telecom tower you need to climb across the fences if you want to get to the summit. Clearly not allowed, so it's your own call ...

For the descent follow the mountain road back to the car.

20. July 2008

This was our first full day in Lucca, and I didn't fancy a long drive to get to a mountain. From where we were living I had a good view of a mountain with something that looked like a telecom tower. I therefore decided to pay this mountain a visit. Since I hadn't been able to get hold of a map of that part of Tuscany I drove purely by instinct, trying to get closer and closer to the summit.

After a few unsuccessful attempts at getting to something that might act as a trail head I finally seemed to find the right place. From here I walked the short distance to the telecom tower (just over 1 km). Here I jumped across the fence and proceeded towards the summit. I was then faced with a second fence, this one barbed, so I decided to call it a day and head back down to the car.

After a little more than 20 minutes hiking I was back at the car, very disappointed about not having been to the very summit, and very unhappy about the terrible mountain I had chosen for today's "adventures". Awful, but I know Tuscany has nicer mountains on offer ...
