From Ålesund drive road E39 towards Åndalsnes. Turn left onto road 661 towards Tennfjord/Vatne/Brattvåg at Digerneset and continue 8.7 km until you get to the intersection of roads 661 and 659 at Eidet (by Tennfjord). There is a toll booth 1.6km after leaving road E39 (NOK 30, October 2009). At the Eidet intersection turn left on road 659, and follow this road to Brattvåg. In Brattvåg drive through the village centre and turn right towards the ferry port (signs for "Dryna" and "Fjørtoft"). Get the ferry across to Dryna (this ferry doesn't run very often, so it's best to check the time tables).
At Dryna turn right off the ferry and drive 3.9 km and locate a suitable place to park several cars on the right hand side of the road. Park here.
From the small car park you see Rossfjellet towards east, with the mountain Bløkallen behind it. On the right (south) hand side of Rossfjellet you will see a small pass, and you should aim for this pass. Walk through the pass and follow one of the many paths up along the south-west ridge of Rossfjellet. When you get up on the summit plateau you will see a trigonometric point, but the path doesn't lead towards this point. Hence you need to turn left from the path when you are some 100 metres from the summit.
From the summit continue north, down to a wide shelf a little below the summit. Then gradually turn left towards a wall and follow the path that runs next to the wall. This path, although a little cumbersome, will take you back down to the mash, and from here you can follow a very vague path back to your car.
I had been hiking Klausethornet and some other Midsund mountains earlier this Saturday and had 1½ hours to kill before the next ferry would take me back to Brattvåg and the main land. I therefore decided to make a quick visit to Rossfjellet. I didn't know what route to follow, but when I found a place to park next to road 668 I decided to try my luck from there. After having crossed a slightly boggy section at the beginning of the hike I soon got onto an acceptable path and followed this to the summit plateau, and then across to the summit. By now it was a bit on the dark side for taking good photos without having a tripod, so I only captured a few images before trying my luck at an alternative descent relative to my ascent route. After a slight de-tour I managed to find a path down through the small forest, disturbing an owl on my way, and then back to the car.
After the hike I changed into clean clothes and drove to the ferry. But since I still had more than half an hour waiting ahead of me I decided to drive back to Midsund for a Coke and a chocolate. At the store there was a considerable queue, making me a bit concerned about getting back to the ferry port in time, but I didn't want to put my goods back in the shelves so decided to try my luck (if I lost I would have to wait another 2:50 hours). So my driving back to the ferry was a bit quicker than what was allowed on these roads, but it paid off in terms of getting to the ferry in time.
