From Reykjavik drive road 41 approximately 35 km south-west towards Keflavik. Turn left onto road 43 and drive 11.0 km (2.9 km south of the exit to Blue Lagoon), and turn right onto a gravel road a little after the top of a small hill. Turn right and drive 500 metres back north on the gravel road, and park next a cylindrical building (water tank).
Start your hike by continuing 650 metres along the gravel road and then turn left up a path shortly after the forest. Follow the path up to its highest point at 160 metres, and then continue down and across the flat section. At the other side of the flat section turn a little left on a rough gravel road, and then up to a steep gravel path. This wide gravel path zigzags a couple of times up to the summit plateau, where you find the summit cairn.
Descend by reversing your ascent route.
The whole family had been to the Blue Lagoon this afternoon, and after I'd had my dose of hot water I changed into hiking gear and headed off to Thorbjarnarfell for a short hike. And then back to the Blue Lagoon to pick up the others, before we continued to Grindavik and got ourselves some light food.
